Frequently asked questions about hosting a wake

What is a wake?

A wake is a gathering following a funeral service. Funerals can be extremely emotional and wakes offer the opportunity to share happy memories while spending time with loved ones.

What is the difference between a wake and a funeral?

The main difference between a wake and a funeral are the types of rituals involved. Funerals are a method of saying a final farewell to a loved one. Depending on your religious affiliation, there are hymns sung and/or eulogies read before burial or cremation takes place.

In contrast, wakes are associated with celebrating the life of a recently deceased loved one. These events often involve food, drinks and sharing happy memories. Traditionally, the wake follows the funeral.

Why should we book Nailcote Hall as our wake venue?

Nailcote Hall is a calm, tranquil and beautiful setting for you to reminisce about happy times with the loved one whose life is being celebrated. Whether your group remains in your chosen private function room or decides to wander through our peaceful gardens, Nailcote Hall is the perfect setting.

Guests who live far away can utilise our elegant hotel rooms to relieve the stress of travelling so that they can focus entirely on spending time with loved ones.

Finally, our team understands how sensitive these occasions are and will do everything in their power to make the day as peaceful as possible for you and your guests.

Do you bring something to a celebration of life?

While it is not a requirement, some people like to make a gesture when attending a funeral or celebration of life. Traditionally, flowers are given; however, it has become popular to:

  • Donate to a specific charity that was close to the heart of the loved one
  • Set up a scholarship of some kind in the loved one's honour

The immediate family will often communicate ahead of the service what would be most appreciated. There is no expectation to bring anything when attending a wake.

What do you wear to a celebration of life event?

The immediate family members usually dictate the dress code for a funeral or a celebration of life. Traditional attire tends to be black; however, more and more families are requesting specific colours or brighter clothing in general.

Guests tend to remain in the same clothing for the wake, so while you may want to wear something respectful, it is recommended that you opt for an outfit that is also comfortable.
