Christmas is just around the corner, and the festive spirit has certainly landed across Warwick, including Birmingham, Warwick, Stratford-upon-avon and Leamington Spa. The choice of what to do this festive season has never been greater - making it even harder to pick just a handful to recommend. There are a variety of great nights out, food and mini breaks available, perfect for couples and families.
However, we’ve selected a range of different activities and events going on in December to get you in the Christmas spirit, so there won’t be a “bah humbug” in sight. With events such as traditional plays and Christmas markets, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this Christmas in Warwickshire.
This year the Royal Shakespeare Theatre will bring Charles Dickens’ traditional tale to life. Ebenezer Scrooge will once again be visited by three ghosts over the course of dark December night with the hope they are show him the error of his ways. Award-winner David Edgar has written this adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’ and we are assured it is not to be missed. Don’t believe us? Watch the trailer here.
Warwick Castle is home to Santa once again this Christmas, as well as the Horrible Histories team. Santa Sleepovers are the ideal mini-break for the family. Santa needs your help this year to find his reindeer before he has to make that all important delivery on December 24th. With assistance from some famous faces, you will help him solve the clues and find Rudolph and the herd in time for Christmas.
After this, you can put your feet up and enjoy an overnight stay in the castle’s accommodation. Choose from a woodland lodge, knights lodge or a tower suite fit for a king. Santa will also be telling festive stories to the little ones to send them off to sleep, and you can even arrange for one of his elves to wake you up. This is as close to Lapland as you can get.
A little further afield, Birmingham hosts one the best Christmas markets in the UK. For all the finest German-themed Christmas treats, drinks and gifts you have to head into the heart of Birmingham and stroll round the Frankfurt Market. The market has been extended even further this year to add even more festive food stalls. Have your pick from a Christmas dinner in a Yorkshire pudding, delightful chocolatey Belgian waffles or, of course a classic German sausage. The market is open now so get down their and grab yourself a Stein to get you in the Christmas spirit.
Once again, Kenilworth Castle will transform their grounds into a Christmas fairytale wonderland this December. The Enchanted Kenilworth Forest will combine light, sound and colour to turn the dark grounds into a playground of festive imagination.
Once you’ve made it through the magical trail, the fun continues. You’ll find a traditional fairground at the end of the trail with attractions such as a carousel and swing boats to take you back to Christmases gone by. There is also a range of festive treats, including mince pies, to indulge in after an evening exploring this winter wonderland. Wrap up warm and book yourself some tickets for one of the nine nights this event will be running on.
If you want to experience the true meaning of Christmas beyond the gifts, food and lights, then head to St Mary’s Church in Warwick to see the Armonico Consort. They will be performing carols by candlelight on the 8th and 20th of December, bringing back some tradition to the festive season. Performing a selection of well-known carols, seasonal favourites and newly discovered songs in a picturesque setting of a candlelit church - it is traditional Christmas at its finest.
