Golfing Royalty and Celebrity Favourites Descend Upon Nailcote Hall
Each year, the Farmfoods British Par 3 welcomes a host of major golfing stars, celebrity golf enthusiasts and talented amateur players to take part in the most popular and hotly contested Par 3 competition in the country.
For 2013, the Championship will again be hosted by the inimitable Tony Jacklin CBE, a stalwart of the international golfing community, three time victorious Ryder Cup captain and twice major winner. Having famously revolutionised the European Ryder Cup team’s approach to the previously American dominated competition, the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship host placed the team on a level playing field that has continued to support the continent’s dominance of the competition ever
Jacklin will be joined at this year’s events by fellow Ryder Cup captain and winning ’91 Masters’ champion Ian Woosnam OBE, returning to the tournament for a second year and former Ryder Cup team mate Sam Torrance OBE, playing in the Championship for the very first time.
The quality of the competition has increased year on year, with ever increasing numbers of European Tour professionals trying their hand at Nailcote Hall’s Cromwell Course throughout the four day event. This year, the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship will welcome long term supporter and fan of the event Graeme Storm, along with Gary Boyd, Tommy Fleetwood, Eddie Pepperell, Steve Webster, Jamie Elson, Paul Broadhurst, Marc Warren, Lee Slattery, Andy Sullivan, Jamie Spence, Robert Rock, John Parry and Scott Jamieson, as well as young star of the Ladies European Tour and mentee of Tony Jacklin himself, Charley Hull.
The European Senior Tour will also be well represented this year, with a strong field of players well accustomed to success in many of the major competition dates on the annual calendar. High profile player Gary Wolstenholme MBE will be joined by Senior Tour winner Paul Wesselingh, as well as last year’s Championship winner DJ Russell. Returning this year to retain his title, Russell will be just one of the competition’s former victors who are unable to resist the allure of this exciting and dynamic short course event.
Former Ryder Cup Vice-Captain Peter Baker, the very first winner of the Farmfoods British Par 3 following its ‘rebirth’ in 1996, will be returning to the tournament for the first time and will undoubtedly be delighted to be taking on the Cromwell Course along with its many additions and developments.
Female golfers will also be represented at this year’s tournament and Alison Nicholas, the captain who inspired her Solheim Cup team to victory in Ireland in 2011 showcased all the determination and leadership that characterises this formidable competitor. Throughout her 20 year career on tour, Nicholas impressed time and again not only with her success but by the restless ambition and drive that saw her excel not only on the Ladies European Tour, but on the LPGA tour in the United States. Returning this year, Nicholas will of course be hoping to take some of the substantially increased £100,000 prize fund away with her.
Former Nottinghamshire County Cricket star, turned professional golfer, Franklyn Stephenson will also be attending the tournament for the first time. Renowned for his incredible all-rounder capabilities and outstanding golfing performance, Stephenson will undoubtedly be hoping to play some of his best golf on Nailcote Hall’s Cromwell Course.
If such a star studded line up of professional golfers is not enough for the huge annual spectator contingent, there will also be a substantial celebrity offering, all enthusiastic golfers and more than equipped to make a substantial impression on the short course event.
This year welcomes new and exciting players, as well as a range of familiar faces, all returning once more to try their hand at the Cromwell Course’s challenging holes. 2003 Rugby World Cup winning flanker Neil Back MBE, footballing superstar Robbie Savage, England and Gary Lineker are among the names taking to the short course for the first time.
Nailcote Hall will also welcome ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ sensation Len Goodman, comedian Jasper Carrott OBE, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel MBE, snooker’s ‘Mr Maximum’ Willie Thorne, England’s most capped player of all time Peter Shilton OBE, Ashes hero Matthew Hoggard MBE and many, many more.
